Dam-Fed Eco Pool & Nursery Loop

Water ManagementEcological Design

This property already had a dam — what it didn't have was a way to use that water without a pump running constantly, or a way to swim in it. The brief was to build a system that drew from the dam, supplied a tree nursery and a swimmable eco pool, and returned the water clean rather than simply draining it away.

A solar-powered pump lifts water from the dam to three Jojo tanks on a raised wooden platform, high enough that everything downstream runs on gravity. From there a 1500L tank supplies the tree nursery and tops up the eco pool — a natural swimming pool with no chlorine or chemical treatment, biologically filtered instead. Pool water exits through a gravel filtration bed that polishes it before it re-enters the landscape, then travels down a hand-built stone river back into the dam.

The result is a closed loop: the dam feeds the pool, the pool feeds the nursery, and the filtration bed and stone river return clean water to the dam rather than treating it as a one-way draw. Nothing about it depends on grid power or ongoing chemical inputs.
