1. Constructed Wetlands
A constructed wetland treats wastewater by passing it through layered sand, gravel, and wetland plants (reeds, sedges), which host bacteria that break down organic material and filter pathogens naturally.
- How it works: Wastewater flows horizontally or vertically through the gravel bed; plant roots and biofilm remove nutrients and pathogens before the water discharges or is reused for irrigation

- Maintenance: Minimal — quarterly inspection, occasional plant trimming, no chemicals or electricity required for gravity-fed designs

2. Biodigesters
An anaerobic biodigester breaks down organic waste (blackwater, kitchen scraps, animal manure) in an oxygen-free chamber, producing methane biogas usable for cooking and a nutrient-rich liquid fertiliser as a byproduct.
- How it works: Waste is fed into a sealed digester tank where bacteria break it down over 20–30 days, releasing biogas captured for use and leaving a liquid digestate suitable for fertilising non-edible crops
- Cost: R60,000–R150,000 for a household-scale system; annual maintenance R2,000–R5,000
- Output: A family-scale digester can produce enough biogas for 1–3 hours of cooking per day, depending on feedstock volume
- Best suited to: Properties with livestock or significant kitchen/garden organic waste to feed the system consistently
3. Composting Systems
The simplest and cheapest approach — three-bin composting systems process kitchen scraps, garden waste, and (with a composting toilet) humanure into usable soil-building compost.
- Cost: R5,000–R20,000 for a well-built multi-bin system
- Composting toilets: Separate liquid and solid waste, with solids composting aerobically over 6–12 months to produce safe, pathogen-free soil amendment
- Best suited to: Smaller properties, or as a complement to a wetland/biodigester system for kitchen and garden waste specifically
4. Combining Systems
Most off-grid properties in the Garden Route use a combination rather than a single system: a constructed wetland for greywater and treated blackwater, a biodigester or composting toilet for solid waste, and a compost bin for kitchen and garden organics. This spreads treatment across appropriately sized systems rather than over-engineering one to do everything.
5. Permits & Regulations
On-site waste treatment systems require health department approval in South Africa, particularly for systems handling blackwater. Requirements vary by municipality — George, Knysna, and surrounding municipalities generally require an approved design from a qualified practitioner before installation, plus a completion inspection. Budget this into your project timeline; approval typically takes 4–8 weeks.
6. Maintenance Checklist
- Constructed wetlands: Trim plants twice yearly, check for even flow distribution quarterly
- Biodigesters: Monitor gas pressure weekly, check feedstock balance monthly, inspect seals annually
- Composting systems: Turn compost every 2–4 weeks, monitor moisture and temperature, harvest finished compost every 6–12 months
