The region averages 5–6 kWh/m²/day of solar irradiance — strong enough for reliable off-grid power, though slightly lower than the Karoo interior due to coastal cloud cover in winter months (June–August). 1. Choosing a System Type

Off-Grid (Standalone)

No grid connection at all. Panels charge a battery bank, and an inverter supplies the household. Required for remote properties without Eskom or municipal supply nearby, or where the cost of a grid connection exceeds the cost of going fully independent.

Hybrid

3. The Installation Process

  1. Site assessment: Roof orientation, shading, structural load capacity, and cable run distances are surveyed.
  2. Design & quote: A certified installer produces a single-line diagram and formal quote, including panel layout and battery placement.
  3. Municipal notification: Most George-area municipalities require notification for grid-tied and hybrid systems; standalone off-grid systems typically only need building approval for the structure housing batteries/inverter.
  4. Installation: Typically 2–5 days depending on system size, including racking, wiring, inverter commissioning, and battery integration.
  5. Commissioning & handover: System is tested under load, monitoring app configured, and documentation (compliance certificate, warranties) handed over.

4. Maintenance & Lifespan

Solar panels lose roughly 0.5–0.8% efficiency per year and typically carry 20–25 year performance warranties. Coastal installations should rinse panels of salt spray 2–3 times a year. Inverters generally need replacement once in a 20-year system life (10–15 year lifespan); lithium batteries are usually the second major cost after 10+ years.

5. Return on Investment

With grid electricity in the region averaging R2.50–R3.00/kWh and rising annually, a well-sized 7 kW hybrid system typically pays for itself in 8–12 years through avoided electricity costs and load-shedding resilience, then continues generating free power for another decade or more.
